Halloween Coloring Pages

Color By Fun Fact

Use our Halloween coloring pages to add more spooky fun to the holiday by learning as you create. Below are fun facts about the holiday, each paired with a creative coloring prompt. Play Color By Fun Fact to explore more about Halloween or as a simple way to get kids involved in an artistic activity.

Jack-o-lanterns were first carved from turnips.

Before pumpkins became the go-to-gourd for carving, people in Ireland carved faces in turnips and used them as lanterns to ward of evil.

✎ Prompt: Color your pumpkin to look like a turnip to imagine what the turnip lanterns might have looked like.

“Bedsheet ghosts” were inspired by burial shrouds and theater.

In many cultures, the dead were wrapped in white cloth for burial. Early stage productions used the same look for ghost characters, helping cement the classic bedsheet ghost we know today.

✎ Prompt: Style your ghosts to represent characters from a favorite movie, TV show, or play.

Cats were once considered magical protectors.

In ancient cultures like Egypt, cats were seen as powerful guardians. Later folklore linked black cats to witches, which gave them their Halloween fame.

✎ Prompt: Color your Halloween cat with a magical aura around them. Add stars, sparkles, or even a cluster of mystical jewels shining around them.

Bats aren’t blind and use sound to help them “see.”

While “blind as a bat” is a common saying, it’s not quite accurate. Bats actually have pretty good vision. But they get an extra boost from echolocation, giving them the ability to use sound waves to determine object location. This helps them hunt and navigate in the dark.

✎ Prompt: Add echolocation “sound waves” around your bat to show off their special skill.

Cauldrons were once common cooking tools.

Before they became symbols of witches and potions, cauldrons were used every day for making stews and soups over open fires.

✎ Prompt: Give your cauldron a design inspired by dinnerware and pottery. Do you choose delicate florals, ornate patterns, classic blue-and-white china, or something of entirely different?
